A Few of David's Pillars
Education
Education is one thing that we must get right. It is important that we invest in our future by investing in public education and our youth. The very entity whose associates nurture the creativity of our young scholars, inspire them, and prepare our most valuable assets to lead and ensure a thriving future for our state and nation.
We must invest in our teachers and pay them a wage that is at a minimum, equal to the value that they add….we have work to do here. We must uphold the promise of public schools, which is high caliber teachers and rigorous curriculum in safe and supportive environments regardless of what zip code you live in and what your individual needs are.
Economy
Working families have to make ends meet in a way politicians don’t seem to understand. I’ve never been a politician and I’m not going to start now.
Our government’s broken because the people we elect are out of touch. As President of the Peoria Unified School District Governing Board, I’ve helped build some of the most successful schools in the state. The past few years have presented challenges against a budget that serves the fourth largest school district in our state and its families. We continue to problem solve, operate at high levels and innovate despite the challenges that we are facing due to current economic strains. In this leadership role, we delivered real measurable results, to help ease financial challenges on students and their families and to ensure that all our young scholars are prepared to shape tomorrow.
In the Legislature, here’s what I’ll focus on to support you and lessen the current economic strains:
• Support small businesses to create jobs and jump-start our economy
• Students that graduate who are prepared to compete and succeed in the 21st century workforce
• Ensure that our state’s current tax structure aligns with what matters to you most.
You deserve an appropriately funded education system, an economy that grows small businesses and ensures that you are provided with an equitable opportunity to live a life of fulfillment in a safe and supportive community.
Voice
My wife and I have lived in the City of Peoria since 1997. And, since being elected to the Peoria Unified Governing Board in 2016 and then re-elected in 2020, I have yet to see a legislator who is supposed to represent us ask for our input. I can count on one finger, the number of representatives who have attended a board meeting of Arizona's fourth largest school district to learn more and listen to understand how they can be a relevant solution for the communities they serve.
I am a very engaged leader, who places a high level of importance on the voices of those who I serve. Without your voice and me listening intentionally, I would be doing a disservice to you and our community. I will continue to prioritize your input and do my best to step into your shoes with compassion and empathy.
Safeguarding Human Rights
We must uphold the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. For it is these unalienable rights that the Declaration of Independence says have been given to all humans by their Creator, and which governments are created to protect…not take away.
The most recent action by SCOTUS to strip women of their right to make their own health decisions is taking us backwards and is unacceptable. It is doing our society an injustice by making decisions that are politically driven versus driven by the will of who they serve…the people. I will bring humanity back into the seat of State Senator and ensure that all are given an equitable opportunity to live a life of fulfillment as their natural selves.
I am a very engaged leader, who places a high level of importance on the voices of those who I serve. Without your voice and me listening intentionally, I would be doing a disservice to you and our community. I will continue to prioritize your input and do my best to step into your shoes with compassion and empathy.
Affordable Housing
Affordable housing is a subject that impacts all life-stages, from our young-new homeowners to our active adults. It saddens me to hear a story about a family who, only a few years ago were able to afford their home, to now being priced out of the security of a roof over their head due to today’s soaring rent prices.
We must prioritize people over profits, so that all can live a life of fulfillment, raise their family and retire with dignity in a home where familial traditions, lasting memories, love and support are possible.
Protecting our Water Resources
Good leadership listens to resident experts and ensures that the right people are at the table to make objective and informed decisions. Those closest to our water issues have not been shy about informing state leadership on what is coming around the corner…unfortunately to no avail.
As a result, our major water sources are at 25%-30% capacity and we are needing to come up with a savings of 2 to 6 million acres of water by August 2022. To put things into perspective, 2 million acres of water would place the City of Phoenix under 6-feet of water.
I will continue to listen to understand and make decisions that not only protect our environment and resources but also anticipate what is coming around the corner.
Responsible Gun Ownership
Like so many, I am heartbroken and frustrated by the senseless loss of human lives that continue to take place at schools, social events and in the community. No parent should have to fear for their child’s safety when they send them to school. And no family should have to fear for their loved one’s life when they go off to work or attend a social event.
Schools, districts, and communities across the nation continue to be placed in adverse situations due to the discussions around responsible gun ownership prioritizing political considerations versus humanity...the many lives that have been lost and continue to be lost. It is unacceptable that greed and individual-political gain are more important than the lives of our most valuable assets, our youth and the lives of our most valuable leaders, our teachers and staff and the lives of people.
I will continue to prioritize the health, wellness, and safety of all the lives that I serve by not allowing political gain or greed to have a weighted voice. What will be weighted are the voices of people, ethics and morals.
